Alexander Lukashenko remarked that the state of affairs in the areas affected by the Chernobyl disaster is getting better although a fair share of hardships and difficulties can be observed. Alexander Lukashenko and Petro Poroshenko will discuss ways to improve it further during the forthcoming talks. “We are going to discuss problems so that we could make life better for Ukrainians and Belarusians. Particularly close to the border,” said the Belarus president.

The heads of state were made familiar with the state of affairs in the Chernobyl zone on 26 April. “We are concerned about one and only thing: how to restore life in these areas,” said Alexander Lukashenko.

The two leaders also visited the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and were made familiar with, as Alexander Lukashenko put it, “the great work the Ukrainian state has done together with partners”. “They have done everything to minimize the dreadful consequences of the Chernobyl catastrophe,” said the Belarusian leader.

26 April when another anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster is marked is a sorrowful day for the nations of Belarus and Ukraine, stressed Alexander Lukashenko. Before meeting with residents of the agrotown the two leaders went to the St Michael Church in Lyaskovichi where they lit candles in remembrance of Chernobyl catastrophe victims.
