MINSK, 18 June (BelTA) - Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko will represent Belarus at the EU’s Eastern Partnership leaders' video conference on 18 June, BelTA learned from spokeswoman for the Belarusian government Aleksandra Isayeva.

On the eve of the summit, Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei and European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi had a telephone conversation. According to the ministry’s press service, the parties discussed the outcomes of the virtual Eastern Partnership Ministerial Meeting held on 11 June and the preparations for the upcoming videoconference of the leaders of the EU and EaP countries scheduled for 18 June.  “The parties also exchanged views on a wide range of topical issues on the Belarus-EU agenda,” the press service informed.

Ahead of the Eastern Partnership leaders' video conference, the European Union-funded Eastern Neighborhood published the results of an opinion survey conducted in six countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. The field work for the survey took place between February and March 2020 (before COVID-19 crisis) and was based on face-to-face interviews with a representative sample of 1,000 people in each country.

According to the opinion survey, 38% of Belarusians have a positive image of the European Union (EU), 46% have a neutral image of the EU, with 12% holding a negative opinion. 4% are not aware or never heard of the EU. 54% of Belarusians feel relations with the European Union are good. 45% of people in Belarus trust the EU, which is slightly more than those who trust the Eurasian Economic Union (39%). 41% of Belarusians acknowledge EU support, 52% of whom consider it effective.

The Eastern Partnership unites the EU and six post-Soviet countries: Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. This program is aimed at promoting political association and economic integration with the European Union.
