Parliaments of Belarus, Australia may set up friendship groups

MINSK, 18 October (BelTA) - Members of the delegations of Belarus and Australia held a meeting on the margins of the 137th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in St. Petersburg, BelTA learned from the press service of the House of Representatives.

The Belarusian delegation included Vice Chairman of the House of Representatives Boleslav Pirshtuk and chairman of the standing commission on international affairs and national security of the Council of the Republic Sergei Rakhmanov. The Belarusian side expressed confidence that this meeting can have a historic significance marking the beginning of intensification of mutually beneficial cooperation between the legislatures of both countries. In order to increase interest in Belarus on the part of potential business partners, the Australian MPs were briefed on Belarus’ opportunities in trade, economy, science, agriculture, education, culture and tourism.

The Australian MPs thanks the Belarusian colleagues for the meeting. They noted that the cooperation with Australia can greatly increase the presence of Belarus in the Asia-Pacific region.

“The parties agreed on the need to set up friendship groups in the parliaments of the two countries to further enhance inter-parliamentary contacts and to consider exchanging official visits,” the press service said.

During the IPU events Boleslav Pirshtuk gave an interview to First Deputy Director General of TASS News Agency Mikhail Guzman. The vice speaker spoke about the role of the Belarusian Parliament in the political system of the state, its activities in international organizations and the consolidated position of the Belarusian and Russian MPs in various organizations, including in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Belarus-Russia Union State.

Boleslav Pirshtuk took note of the high level of organization of the 137th IPU Assembly in Russia.

Sergei Rakhmanov, in turn, participated in the adoption of the draft resolution “Sharing our diversity: The 20th anniversary of the. Universal Declaration on Democracy” prepared by the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights.
