Over 70 foreign spies stopped by Belarus’ KGB in 2025

Over 70 foreign spies stopped by Belarus’ KGB in 2025

MINSK, 24 December (BelTA) – The counterintelligence division of the State Security Committee has detected and documented actions of over 70 agents of foreign intelligence agencies this year. The figure was revealed after Chairman of the State Security Committee of Belarus Ivan Tertel delivered a report to Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko on 24 December, BelTA has learned.

Speaking about counterintelligence efforts, Ivan Tertel stated that intelligence agencies of foreign states use new forms and methods of work, for instance, distance recruiting. “This year the committee’s counterintelligence division has detected and documented actions of over 70 agents of foreign intelligence agencies. Actions of some of them were quite extensive and have been stopped in accordance with the Criminal Code. When counterintelligence is up to snuff, intelligence work is easier,” the KGB chief stressed.

In his words, among other things foreign intelligence agencies are interested in matters relating to the deployment of nuclear weapons and Oreshnik missile systems in Belarus. “Foreign intelligence agencies have set up massive operations in order to monitor the situation. We’ve analyzed this sequence of events. This is why we’d anticipated statements by individual political figures and representatives of foreign security agencies. We’d even known that they would be made,” Ivan Tertel added.
