Over 18,000 constituencies in local elections in Belarus

MINSK, 24 November (BelTA) – A total of 18,111 constituencies will be established in Belarus for the elections to the local councils of deputies, reads a report posted in the new special section on the website of the Belarusian Central Election Commission, BelTA has learned.

According to the election schedule, the constituencies will be formed after the territorial election commissions are set up, which, in turn, must happen no later than 24 November. There will be 13,224 rural constituencies and 3,768 district constituencies.

The new section on the CEC website is dedicated to the upcoming elections. It contains videotaped addresses by CEC Chairwoman Lidia Yermoshina, information for voters, candidates, observers, members of the election commissions and also the news about the ongoing campaign.

As BelTA earlier informed, the 2018 local elections are scheduled for 18 February. Nomination of candidates to deputies of the local councils will be running from 10 December 2017 to 8 January 2018 inclusively.

Running for the seat at the local council of deputies can be a citizen of Belarus, over 18 years old, with no criminal record and living within the corresponding administrative unit. Russian citizens who permanently live in Belarus also have the right to take part in the elections.

According to the country’s legislation, there is no turnout threshold in local elections. The one who gets the most votes is elected to the local council.

The elections budget will be close to $10.5 million in foreign currency terms.
