Origins of Belarusian diplomacy discussed at Foreign Ministry

MINSK, 8 January (BelTA) – Belarus’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs has hosted a roundtable session timed to the 100th anniversary of the Belarusian diplomatic service that will be marked on 22 January, BelTA has learned.

Taking part in the session were Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Dapkiunas, veteran of the Belarusian diplomatic service, retired ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary Vladimir Schastny, representatives of the academic community: Dean of the Faculty of International Relations at Belarusian State University, Doctor of Science [History], Professor Victor Shadursky, Professor at the Faculty of International Relations at Belarusian State University Vladimir Snapkovsky, Assistant Professor of the History Faculty at Belarusian State Pedagogical University Anatoly Veliky, as well as Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Belaruskaya Dumka Magazine Tatyana Shablyko.

The participants of the roundtable session focused on key milestones of the Belarusian diplomatic service development. They analyzed the origins of the national diplomacy in hindsight. They identified a series of gaps and assumed that the study of these blind spots can be of great interest for the general public.

The participants of the session shared their views on a diplomatic profession and its importance for the state, including in light of the decisions to institute heraldic symbols of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They emphasized the relevance of the existing system of training diplomatic personnel in Belarus. They suggested conducting research, compiling a database and studying archived materials. The participants of the roundtable session deem it necessary to conduct such events on a regular basis and to strengthen cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the academic community.

The results of the discussion will be reviewed in the January issue of the Belaruskaya Dumka Magazine.
