MINSK, 15 June (BelTA) - Belarus and China have enormous potential for mutually beneficial relations, joint response to systemic changes in the international environment, Director of the Belarusian Institute of Strategic Studies Oleg Makarov said at the international online conference "Belarus and China: A common trajectory of development," BelTA learned.

"Holding such conferences has become a tradition. We believe that such interaction should become regular, which will help us to exchange expert opinions and findings. I am sure that direct communication will help the participants of the online meeting to strengthen contacts, and to develop expert diplomacy in general,” Oleg Makarov stressed. “To date, expert diplomacy is gaining momentum, and the importance of think tanks has been growing in an increasingly unpredictable world. There is no doubt that the Belarusian and Chinese think tanks will help to find new growth points between our countries. We would like to thank all our Chinese partners for their willingness to develop an expert dialogue.”

According to him, the Belarusian-Chinese cooperation has showed that two different states have enormous potential for mutually beneficial relations, joint response to systemic changes in the international situation. "The absolute priority in cooperation between our countries is to overcome the negative impact of the pandemic as soon as possible and to adapt to the new realities of relations between the states," the expert said.

Oleg Markov noted that the conference is held within the framework of the Year of Regions of Belarus and China, ahead of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.  “With the Communist Party of China marking its 100th anniversary, I would like to emphasize an impressive progress in the development of the People's Republic of China. In the difficult conditions, the Chinese authorities have managed to meet the basic and social needs of society, including the elimination of poverty. Secondly, the Chinese state has invariably remained socially-oriented, maintaining justice in society and focusing on the interests of its citizens,” he said.

According to Oleg Makarov, international relations have undergone significant transformations. “The global landscape has changed significantly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Today the world is facing a number of new challenges, such as global recession, the confrontation of the world centers of power. The situation in international relations, the growing trend towards the disconnection of countries - deglobalization - require developing joint adequate solutions and harnessing new opportunities for joint development. New relations should be based not only on pragmatic elements of trade but also on elements of support, spiritual unity, closeness, political ideals and social standards,” the BISR director said.

“I am sure that as representatives of the expert and analytical community we can play a greater role in researching social and political problems, making forecasts and strategies, and developing practical proposals for decision-makers. The Belarusian expert community is keenly interested in exploring China's best practices. As for the BISR, we are interested in party building, regional development of China. I hope that after our countries lift restrictive measures imposed amid the pandemic, we will be able to resume our mutual visits, continue in-person communication and strengthen the legal framework of our cooperation,” added Oleg Makarov.
