Nomination of candidates to Belarus' local council to begin 10 December

MINSK, 15 November (BelTA) - Nomination of candidates to deputies of the local councils will start on 10 December, Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina said at the meeting to discuss the preparations for the local elections, BelTA has learned.

Nomination of candidates to deputies will be running from 10 December to 8 January. 8 January will be the last day for filing the papers for the registration of candidates to deputies,” Lidia Yermoshina said. Registration will be held from 9 January till 18 January.

The registration will be followed by the election campaign which will run until 18 February, inclusively. According to the chairperson of the Central Election Commission, the calendar plan has been complemented with a section about candidates’ election campaign funds. The section contains information on the period to form the fund and provide final reports after the election campaign.

Voters should be officially informed about the forthcoming elections before 7 February. Precinct election commissions should be provided with voting ballots before 12 February.

Territorial election commissions of all levels are to be set up no later than 24 November. There are 1,309 local councils in Belarus (taking into account the rural ones). Thus, there will be a similar number of territorial commissions. The deadline for submission of documents is 21 November.

Not later than 29 November the printed media should publish the lists of constituencies; their numbers, description and names.

Polling stations will be set up before 16 December. Precinct election commissions will be ready before 3 January. According to Lidia Yermoshina, the deadline for filing the documents on the nomination of members to the precinct election commissions is 31 December 2017 (Sunday).

As BelTA earlier informed, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko supported the proposal to hold elections to local councils on 18 February 2018 during the working meeting with Chairperson of the Central Election Commission Lidia Yermoshina on 14 November. The Central Election Commission named the date as the most optimal. According to the calendar, the elections should be held before 20 February 2018.
