No leniency for corrupt officials in Belarus

MINSK, 14 June (BelTA) – Crime investigators must not show any leniency in fighting corruption. President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko made the statement as he visited the Investigation Committee of Belarus on 14 June, BelTA has learned.

“Close attention should be paid to criminal cases involving the damage of state property by office holders. The same attitude should be practiced to palm greasing in the most important spheres of the society such as economy, state administration, healthcare, education, and other ones. Objective evaluation is necessary regardless of the rank of the perpetrator. Leniency is out of the question! Nobody is above the law,” stressed the Belarusian leader.

Alexander Lukashenko stressed he has been paying more and more attention to fighting corruption recently, because the problem is once again rearing its head. “We cannot allow it, because while we may make any plans, corruption will destroy every living thing, all the endeavors if we don’t suppress it,” underlined the President. “Therefore, I primarily focus on fighting corruption manifestations. Officials and not low-ranking ones at that are in the thick of it. But if the head starts rotting, then the entire system will go down. This is why I talk about it more and more”.

The head of state demanded that every case should be investigated for the sake of removing corruption consequences in addition to punishing the guilty. “The Belarusian society and I expect the Investigation Committee to investigate such cases as best as possible. The best and highly professional investigators should be employed,” noted the President.

Alexander Lukashenko also emphasized that the development of the national economy and the country’s economic security are of primary importance now. Law enforcement agencies should take it into account. “Your efforts should guarantee that the policy for further liberalization of the economy should stay on course instead of falling into chaos ruled by representatives of the so-called shadow business. The concentration of efforts of all the law enforcement agencies has never been more important for the sake of fighting the most dangerous manifestations, primarily economic, organized, and corruption crimes,” said the head of state.

Alexander Lukashenko believes that it is necessary to focus on crimes that truly endanger the economic stability and security of the state, those that undermine the foundation of the Belarusian economy. “The inevitability of punishment should be the key principle in the operation of investigators and their supervisors,” added the Belarusian leader.
