MINSK, 18 April (BelTA) – The new version of the HIV/AIDS information strategy was signed in Minsk, BelTA has learned.

The document was signed by Belarus Deputy Healthcare Minister – Chief Sanitary Inspector Natalia Zhukova and UN Resident Coordinator in Belarus Joanna Kazana-Wisniowiecki.

It was noted during the signing ceremony that the 2011 strategy helped reduce HIV stigma and discrimination. The new version of the strategy is designed to address today’s challenges.

According to Natalia Zhukova, the HIV prevention subprogram of the Public Health and Demographic Security state program sets forth the major treatment guidelines and objectives. At the same time, it is necessary to build understanding of the important role of a more supportive environment for HIV patients.

The stigma-free environment means that the society speaks openly about the problems facing HIV-positive people and encourages nondiscriminatory attitudes and behaviors, Joanna Kazana-Wisniowiecki said. “We are glad that Belarus pays much attention to this matter and builds the right communication strategies on HIV/AIDS,” she said.

The revised strategy is based on the expertise of healthcare workers and communication experts.

As of 1 March, 21,160 HIV-positive people were registered in Belarus.
