Nationwide clean-up days viewed as good Soviet practice

MINSK DISTRICT, 20 April (BelTA) – Nationwide clean-up days is a good practice from the Soviet past which deserves a place in the present, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko told the media on 20 April, BelTA has learned.

According to the head of state, few people in Belarus consider nationwide clean-up days a thing of the past today. However, when the country began reviving that old Soviet tradition, the president said he had to “persuade” people.

“Thanks God we had people of the older generation who participated in such clean-up days, upheld them and still do it. They helped me a lot. They followed me and then our young people joined us. This is the policy I have always pursued. We cannot cross out anything from our history. We had all these things and we must preserve the best of them. I believe that nationwide clean-up days is a good practice from our past which should stay in the present,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

Last year, the head of state took part in the national clean-up day in his hometown. Given that this year is also held under the motto of the Native Land, journalists thought that the head of state would again go to Alexandria. The president explained that the town is in good order and therefore he decided to go to another region.

“I decided that in the year of the 75th anniversary of Belarus’ liberation it would be a good idea to plant 75 oaks, our very best tree, in Stalin’s Line. Some time later my children and grandchildren will come here and look at this allee which we planted here. For some this is an extra signal that thee Native Land three-year campaign still goes on. This year and the following work we need to work hard to make sure there are no untidy places left in our beautiful Belarus,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
