Muttonen welcomes Kupchyna’s nomination for OSCE Secretary General post

MINSK, 16 March (BelTA) – Alena Kupchyna’s nomination for the post of the OSCE Secretary General is a positive initiative from Belarus, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE PA) Christine Muttonen said in an interview to the Belarus One TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“I believe it to be a positive initiative from Belarus. The decision will be taken by the corresponding institutional structures of our organization. This is, no doubt, a sign that shows Belarus’ readiness to make serious commitments to the international organizations,” Christine Muttonen said.

She stressed that the position of women in the country and the Belarusian society is strong.

“I have a feeling of having spent a week here already: so much political, economic and cultural information. I have decided that I would visit Belarus again,” she said.

Speaking about present-day challenges to security, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly president emphasized the need to develop cooperation in the international arena. The OSCE’s forthcoming session is a great opportunity for such a dialogue. Christine Muttonen voiced appreciation for the leading role that Belarus has played in facilitating a peaceful settlement of the crisis in and around Ukraine.

As was informed, Belarus’ Permanent Representative to the OSCE, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Austria Alena Kupchyna has been named a candidate for the position of the OSCE Secretary General. Alena Kupchyna worked as a deputy minister of foreign affairs of Belarus for a long time and was intimately involved in the implementation of the country’s foreign policy aimed at strengthening security and cooperation in Europe, establishing a dialogue between the East and the West, and resolving the most drastic crisis situations in the region.
