Minsk to host Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Council of Europe in September

MINSK, 28 July (BelTA) – The Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe will meet in Minsk on 11-12 September 2018, Chairman of the Council of the Republic Mikhail Myasnikovich said at a meeting with Marshal of the Senate of Poland Stanislaw Karczewski on 28 July, BelTA has learned.

“We will host such an event for tor the first time. It is a huge responsibility for us. 47 countries are participating in these important integration structures,” said Mikhail Myasnikovich. “Poland has good experience in regional development. We could adopt some of your best practices,” he added.

As for trade and economic cooperation with Poland, we still have a huge untapped potential, the chairman of the Council of the Republic said. Last year, mutual trade increased by more than 20%. This year the bilateral trade is showing good dynamics as well. Mikhail Myasnikovich expressed confidence that the meeting of the intergovernmental commission of the two countries, which is scheduled for autumn 2018, will give a new impetus to the development of Belarusian-Polish contacts and ties.

High-level contacts between the countries have become regular, which creates a good basis for strengthening partnership. “We are really glad to meet you on the Belarusian land, and the dialogue that we currently have with Poland is very important to us. We are ready to initiate new proposals and ideas, especially since both you and we have such,” Mikhail Myasnikovich said.

He added that Belarus and Poland are brought closer not only by the common border, economic cooperation, and interpersonal contacts, but also by the common responsibility for stability and security in the region. It is necessary to make the bilateral interaction stable and consistent. The Belarusian president drew the attention to this at the recent credentials presentation ceremony.

Belarus and Poland have been developing the legal framework of bilateral cooperation. “At present we have about 40 contracts and agreements. The work continues on 11 more documents,” said Mikhail Myasnikovich. He thanked the Polish MPs for their active participation in the events Belarus conducted during its presidency in the Central European Initiative in 2017. These were the meetings of the CEI PD Parliamentary Committee and the CEI Parliamentary Assembly.

The parties also talked over the visit of Chairman of the Council of the Republic Mikhail Myasnikovich to Poland in autumn 2018, and discussed the possibility of organizing an economic forum in Bialystok.

The meeting of Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich with Marshal of the Senate of Poland Stanislaw Karczewski took place in the Council of the Republic. The sides discussed topical issues of bilateral cooperation. Stanislaw Karczewski thanked Mikhail Myasnikovich for the opportunity to meet and discuss the prospects of cooperation between the two countries.
