Minister: Belarus’ CSTO presidency will focus on increasing CSTO cohesion, resolving contradictions

MINSK, 1 March (BelTA) - During its chairmanship in the CSTO, Belarus will focus on increasing the cohesion of the CSTO and resolving contradictions between the member states, Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin told the media on the sidelines of a working meeting of the heads of international military cooperation units of the Armed Forces of the CSTO member states, BelTA has learned.

In order to counter the pressure of Western countries led by the United States, Belarus’ CSTO presidency will focus on the internal contour, on increasing the cohesion of the CSTO member states and resolving contradictions between them, the defense minister said.  This is particularly important for both the organization itself and also for security and stability in its area of responsibility. In terms of external relations, emphasis will be made on strengthening the role and importance of the CSTO in the system of international relations and on consistency of the CSTO's activities with the regional and global security agenda.

The Belarusian president met with the CSTO secretary general in Minsk on 13 February. During the meeting, the parties discussed a number of key issues and highlighted the need to improve the crisis response system and increase the readiness of the CSTO troops to perform tasks as intended, and strengthen military-technical cooperation between the member states. The parties also reviewed the ways of building up the information and analytical capabilities of the CSTO.
