MFA: China resolutely condemns unilateral sanctions against Belarus

MINSK, 22 June (BelTA) - China strongly opposes another package of unilateral EU sanctions against Belarus, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry Zhao Lijian told a regular briefing on Tuesday, TASS reports.

"We strongly oppose the use of threats and unilateral sanctions in international relations. China is against the interference of external forces in domestic affairs of other states," Zhao Lijian said.

According to the Chinese diplomat, the EU should respect the sovereignty of Belarus and the specificity of its social and economic development. "We believe that the Belarusian people are able to ensure political and social stability in their own country by their own efforts. We hope that the international community will play its constructive role in this situation," he concluded.

The EU foreign ministers reached an agreement on Monday to impose the economic sanctions against seven sectors of the Belarusian economy. According to EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, the discussion of measures against Minsk will continue at the meeting of the EU leaders on 24-25 June. The sanctions will be approved after the summit.
