MFA: Belarus closes its embassy in Israel in tit-for-tat move

MINSK, 11 January (BelTA) – Following Israel’s decision to close its embassy in Minsk Belarus, being guided by the principle of mutuality, also has to take a set of measures to complete its diplomatic mission in Tel Aviv, Dmitry Mironchik, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, said commenting on the closure of the Israeli and Belarusian embassies in Minsk and Tel Aviv, BelTA informs.

“The usual diplomatic practice is to take an adequate response to the closure of the embassy. Unfortunately, in connection with Israel’s decision to close its embassy in Minsk we confirm that Belarus, following the principle of mutuality, has to take a set of adequate measures to complete the activity of its diplomatic mission in Tel Aviv,” Dmitry Mironchik said.

The representative of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is confident that the Israeli side commits a mistake by ignoring the fact that the two countries connect the lives and fates of tens of thousands of people for whom Israel and Belarus are native countries as well as the general vibrant bilateral relations in various areas.

“The similar step had already been made by our Israeli partners, back in 2003. Less than a year later they had to realize they had committed an error,” he said.

Dmitry Mironchik is confident that supporting relations between Belarus and Israel at the level of embassies is an objective necessity and the resumption of their activity is a matter of time.
