Makei suggests new principles for prompt achievement of Sustainable Development Goals

MINSK, 22 April (BelTA) – Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei took part in the high-level thematic debate of the UN General Assembly in New York on 21 April where he suggested principles for the prompt achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In his speech, the head of the Belarusian foreign political agency suggested a number of principles of organizing work in the UN in order to promptly achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. “In particular, Vladimir Makei stressed the need to use and coordinate the use of all existing international resources to help countries develop, including expert assistance, financial support and technology transfer,” the ministry informed.

Apart from that, the minister stressed a systemic approach as important in providing international assistance to middle income countries which make the majority of the UN membership. “According to the Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs, there is a need for fair, interested and mutually beneficial participation of these countries, the same as of all other groups of states, in the process of development and receiving international assistance,” the ministry stressed.

Vladimir Makei also apprised the participants of the meeting of Belarus’ efforts on comprehensive implementation of the Global Sustainable Development Goals.

The high-level thematic debate of the UN General Assembly considered the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. It is the first event held after the UN Summit 2015 to highlight practical measures for the implementation of the sustainability targets by 2030.
