Makei: No irresolvable differences of opinion in Belarus-Russia relations

Photo by the Embassy of Belarus in RussiaMINSK, 15 November (BelTA) – There are no differences of opinion in Belarus-Russia relations, which cannot be resolved through smart compromises. Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei made the statement after meeting with Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on 15 November, BelTA has learned.

The sides mentioned positive dynamics of Belarus-Russia trade in 2017. The mutual trade increased by 20%, which speaks volumes, noted Vladimir Makei. The official said: “Arguments in trade and economic affairs crop up from time to time, however, the experience of our relations indicates that there are no differences of opinion, which cannot be resolved with the aid of smart compromises.”

Belarus and Russia continue the policy in favor of advancing integration interaction, carrying out a coordinated policy in the OSCE and other international organizations. “We’ve also discussed the positioning of the Eurasian Economic Union abroad and have formulated certain proposals on the matter, which we will send to our partners,” noted the official.

According to Vladimir Makei, the negotiations with Sergei Lavrov proceeded in a trustful manner. The sides signed a program of coordinated foreign policy actions of the states parties to the Union State Foundation Agreement for 2018-2019. “The program makes up over 30 pages of fine print. It describes a great deal of events, which we should arrange within the next two years. They are related to our interaction on bilateral platforms and in various international organizations. I am convinced that the implementation of the program will help establish even tighter and more trustful contacts between our ministries and countries,” stressed Vladimir Makei.

According to the source, the two foreign ministers also signed a plan for the next year’s consultations. Vladimir Makei noted the plan is significant, too, and includes 23 events. “Consultations will be held to discuss all matters concerning our cooperation in various regional, international organizations on a bilateral basis,” said the Belarusian minister of foreign affairs.
