Makei: No friction or lack of understanding in Belarus-Russia relations

MOSCOW, 8 April (BelTA) – There is no friction or lack of understanding in Belarus-Russia relations, BelTA learned from Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei on 8 April.

The Minister emphasized that Belarus and Russia enjoy the closest kind of coordination on a systemic basis. “We have absolutely no friction or lack of understanding with Russian colleagues,” said Vladimir Makei.

The official pointed out that individual steps and decisions made by the leadership of even such close countries as Belarus and Russia have sprouted some myths and slanted interpretations lately. Vladimir Makei said the meeting with reporters was a good opportunity to clarify things. It is particularly important today since the number of challenges and threats relating to security, economy, and ecology is not going down. The Minister of Foreign Affairs reminded about the migration crisis and the threat of terrorism.

“All these factors once again confirm it is time for the international community to stand together in the face of new reality, it is necessary to overcome the geopolitical egoism of individual players, of which the leadership of Russia and Belarus speaks constantly these days,” reminded Vladimir Makei.

The Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs pointed out that Belarusian-Russian relations comprise a large number of matters and topics, which are worked on constantly and tirelessly within the framework of the Union State of Belarus and Russia, the Commonwealth of Independent States, and the Eurasian Economic Union.

According to the official, the post-Soviet countries do not feel unprotected in the new reality since the Union State of Belarus and Russia, the Eurasian Economic Union, and the Collective Security Treaty Organization offer quite effective instruments. “However, they are absolutely insufficient for overcoming emerging large-scale threats. We need to work out adequate responses at the regional and global levels,” Vladimir Makei is convinced. Belarus and Russia speak in favor of constructive interaction between regional integrations, primarily the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union.
