Makei, Lavrov sign statement to mark anniversary of diplomatic relations

MINSK, 30 June (BelTA) - Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Makei and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov signed a joint statement on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the countries after the talks in Minsk on 30 June, BelTA has learned.

The foreign ministers together with Minister of Communications and Informatization Konstantin Shulgan took part in a ceremony to dedicate the postal envelope to mark the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Belarus and Russia. The envelope depicts the buildings of the embassies of Belarus and Russia.

The joint statement notes that Belarus and Russia have strengthened their relations of alliance and strategic partnership based on the principles of the Union State Treaty of 8 December 1999, and that the new integration agreements are aimed at bringing together macroeconomic policies and harmonizing monetary policies, developing the common transport space, unified markets for electricity, gas, oil and petroleum products and also implementing the unified industrial, agrarian, tax, trade and customs tariff policies.

“The achievements of the Union State can serve as a guide for other countries in terms of regional integration," the document says.

The ministers also lauded the successes of the Eurasian Economic Union. They stated that the key to its further successful development is joint systematic and honest work to fulfill the strategic guidelines for the development of Eurasian Economic Integration until 2025 and the combining of efforts and potentials of economies to counter the illegitimate sanctions of third countries.

The parties expect that eventually the EAEU will increase its weight in the global trade and economic system and become one of the most significant centers for the development of the modern world.

The statement also highlights the successful cooperation between Belarus and Russia in the CSTO. "The first positive experience of peacekeeping was acquired during the crisis events in Kazakhstan in January 2022, when the CSTO demonstrated its ability to act promptly, decisively and within the legal framework. It is important to ensure the further development of the CSTO's potential with a view of maintaining security and stability, including in terms of building up efforts by member states to jointly counter attempts of external destructive interference in the CSTO’s zone of responsibility," the document says.
