MINSK, 1 March (BelTA) – The EU-Georgia association opens additional opportunities for cooperation, Belarus Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told reporters, BelTA has learned.
“We need to use new opportunities for cooperation. If they want to work more closely with the EU, that is fine. I is their choice.
We need to think how we can interact with Georgia and other countries who want to have closer associated relations with the EU, bearing in mind our foreign economic activity,” the minister said.
He said that these countries may provide gateway to the EU market in other areas.
“Of course, there are some concerns. They have been talked a lot about. The concerns are that cheaper goods will flood our market. But this, on the contrary, should encourage us to improve the quality and competitiveness of our products. I am convinced that we will be able to get more benefit in this regard,” Vladimir Makei noted.
“The main thing in this situation is not to invent some imaginary dangers for our economy, the economies of other EEU member states but take a realistic look at the situation. If we see that closer cooperation with a certain EU country is detrimental to our economy, we will take adequate measures. But we cannot now invent some kind of threats and dangers from a theoretical point of view. We need to look at the situation realistically,” he added.
