Makei: Belarus does its best to prevent military conflicts

MINSK, 19 May (BelTA) – Belarus is sincerely doing its best to prevent the use of force to settle conflicts, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told the media on 19 May, BelTA has learned.

According to the minister, Belarus is trying hard to facilitate a peaceful settlement to the conflict in Ukraine, although some may think it is impossible.

“Someone may consider it Utopia, someone may make cynical remarks, but we sincerely want the countries not to seek military solutions to conflicts. We want conflicts to be settled diplomatically, and would like to see integration and regional organizations responsible for addressing such issues play an important role in this,” Vladimir Makei stressed.

In his words, the ways to resolve the conflict in the region are regularly discussed during meetings of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko with the authorities of Russia and Ukraine. “The Belarusian head of state has openly expressed his opinion on the matter many times,” he said.

“One can decide to do nothing, set no big goals, but then there will be no result. We need to make efforts to move even a heavy stone if it is in our way,” the minister said.
