Makei: Belarus against new dividing lines in Europe

MINSK, 7 July (BelTA) - Belarus is not interested in creating new dividing lines in Europe, Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said following a meeting with Latvia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkevics in Riga on 7 July, BelTA has learned.

When asked whether the deployment of Russian air bases in Belarus is possible following the NATO buildup in the Baltic states, Vladimir Makei noted: “I cannot say what will happen tomorrow or the day after. Of course, we will carefully analyze the situation in our region and take adequate measures in response. But we would not want that the moves, which Belarus will take in the military sphere, to contribute to the further increase in military tensions in our region and in the European continent on the whole. We do not want new dividing lines in Europe. We are a small country, and the development of our state depends on peace and stability in the region.”

The Minister stressed that Belarus will act in a very responsible manner when taking measures in response to the military challenges and threats that are possible today. “With regard to the deployment of additional military bases in Belarus, the President of Belarus expressed his position clearly some time ago. There were official statements at other levels in Belarus. Our position on this issue has not changed,” Vladimir Makei noted.
