Makei: A full-scale meeting of heads of state at OSCE platform is long overdue

MINSK, 16 February (BelTA) – A full-fledged meeting of heads of state under the auspices of the OSCE is long overdue, Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said at a press conference on 16 February, BelTA has learned.

“Although Western politicians visited Moscow, met with President Putin and made a number of statements during press conferences, although Moscow and Minsk assured many times that no one poses any threat to the neighboring states, these speculations continue [about Russia’s possible invasion],” Vladimir Makei said.

According to him, the lack of trust hampers the normalization of the situation. “The absence of meetings that would help bring the situation back to normal is also our big problem,” the minister said.

In particular, he recalled that the president of Belarus had long ago come up with the initiative to launch a large-scale international dialogue Helsinki 2. At first, this was perceived skeptically at the international level, but it turned out later that the idea was good and relevant.

“We believe that it is long overdue to hold a full-scale meeting of heads of state at the platform of the OSCE. It would help somewhat restore trust between countries and the division of nations into ‘us’ and ‘them’. We have always pushed for a dialogue. We believe that dialogue is the only way to address issues,” Vladimir Makei said.
