Lukashenko urges Minsk to address parking overload problem

MINSK, 3 September (BelTA) – Minsk city officials should look into ways to ease the parking overload of residential neighborhoods, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with Vladimir Kukharev, Chairman of the Minsk City Executive Committee, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko noted that the neighborhoods in Minsk sometimes create a “dreadful impression”. He was referring to the overcrowding of residential areas with private vehicles. “There is a building, and in front of it there's a park leading to a roadway – nice, beautiful. But that’s rare. In other cases, it’s an ocean of cars. Some are dirty, grimy,” the president said. “It’s not very attractive when a building is drowning in a string of these cars. We need to think about what to do. We can’t escape cars. But we need to consider what to do with the parking issue. In front of a house, near a house, people should still be breathing clean nature – there should be trees, shrubs, flowers, flower beds, and so on.”

The head of state suggested considering ways long term to relive the areas around residential buildings of congestion and to move vehicles further away. “Gradually, not tomorrow, not through bans. But we could move these parking lots somewhere further away. So that people, especially children, could go outside, and the elderly could sit on a bench. Therefore, landscaping is a very important issue for Minsk,” Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized.
