Lukashenko supports FTUB’s initiative on people’s control over prices

MINSK, 19 May (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has supported the initiative of the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus (FTUB) regarding the people’s control over prices at the meeting with FTUB Chairman Mikhail Orda on 19 May, BelTA has learned.

“Thank you for putting forward initiatives to enhance control over the fulfillment of three tasks concerning pricing, employment, remuneration,” the president said. “I’ve heard that you want to organize people’s control over retail prices. Everything can be good ad all right in statistical reports, but the situation concerning basic products and major foodstuffs in shops may be different. Trade unions know this situation very well. Therefore, I support this initiative regarding the control over prices in trade organizations.”

Alexander Lukashenko said that trade unions traditionally take part in the resolution of employment issues. “I will also ask you not to stand aside from this issue and the issue of salaries. Keep these things in sight,” the head of state said.

At the meeting with journalists Mikhail Orda explained that a group for price monitoring has been created in trade unions. “This group will monitor prices mostly for products included in the consumer goods basket. The group will track unjustified price increases. If there are any extremities we will send a signal to the government immediately,” the FTUB chairman said.

In his words, the meeting focused on various issues. Economic issues were in the spotlight. “We have put forward a proposal to revise and improve a number of resolutions of the government,” Mikhail Orda said.

In particular, this pertains to Resolution No. 744 “Concerning labor remuneration” which regulates the formation of salaries. “We absolutely agreed that the increase in salaries should be accompanied by the growth of labor productivity. But we also see that this resolution does not take a number of objective factors concerning the operation of our enterprises into account. These are the seasonal character of work, the specifics of enterprises,” the FTUB chairman said. “And today this resolution even slows down the development of enterprises, artificially restrains the growth of wages. Certain directors even have to take unpopular measures.”
