MINSK, 18 December (BelTA) – Schoolchildren, particularly those in urban areas, should take part in socially beneficial work, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said during a Q&A session following his Address to the Belarusian People and Parliament, BelTA has learned.

The head of state was asked to give his take on the decision of educational institutions to limit mobile phone use and involve children in socially useful activity and work.

“Everything begins with labor. If we, Belarusians, lose our ability to work hard, we are done. Therefore, we must preserve it,” the head of state emphasized. “No one is saying we must toil from dawn to dusk. But can’t we work for two or three hours? Yes, we can. It unites us as a team; it brings us together.”

He underscored the critical importance of engaging young people and schoolchildren in practical work, which involves working the land. “Children must learn that apples and potatoes aren’t harvested from phones or the internet, but come from the soil right here,” the president observed.

Aleksandr Lukashenko leads by personal example, including by planting trees in his village. “I personally try to do everything to keep my own children busy. My children were raised this way. Even the president’s son can do everything I do, and do it well. He even mows the lawn. Therefore, one must work. If you do not engage in physical labor at school, in your youth, you will be of little use,” he stated.

“I am in favor of this and insist that schoolchildren, let alone older youths, be engaged in labor,” the president concluded.
