Lukashenko promises to legislate ‘dictatorship of technology’ in agriculture

MINSK, 3 April (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko stressed the importance of the necessary technological processes in agriculture for good economic results as he spoke at the national seminar held on 3 April to discuss rural development and ways to enhance the efficiency of the country’s agrarian sector, BelTA has learned.

“If you say that we need a dictatorship of technology, we will legislate it. The government needs to draft such a bill and bear the responsibility for putting into practice every provision,” the head of state underlined.

“I would argue if you said this is not the way the market works. The government is in charge of soil fertility, in the first place in agriculture. The key task of the government and all of you in agriculture is soil fertility,” the president noted.

Alexander Lukashenko paid attention to production-related matters, in particular, to the specialization of regional and agricultural companies. “In several regions, the sowing campaign is not based on science. In fact, crop rotation, unfortunately, is a neglected topic,” he added.

Alexander Lukashenko pointed to the reducing use of mineral fertilizers and the decreasing number of plant protection measures, which leads to harvest loss and forage shortage, affects soil fertility, and has other negative effects.

“Every region must have its own sowing plan. However, crop tending is universal. If it is not reasonable to grow many grain crops somewhere, the main effort should focus on clovers and other grasses to provide forage. This sector is the key one for us. In fact, animal husbandry is the most important agricultural sector,” the president emphasized.

He urged the oblast executive committees to follow science-based sowing plans and focus on their specialization.
