Lukashenko plans to share powers with other government bodies by year-end

MINSK, 16 November (BelTA) – I plan to share my powers with other government bodies under the current Constitution, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said in an interview with Belarusian and foreign political observers on 13 November, BelTA has learned.

“A part of our so-called elite wants to change the Constitution so that it has checks and balances. I have already started doing it. Nobody prevents us from doing this even under the current Constitution. We have counted 57 or 70 powers of the president, which, under the present Constitution, can be transferred to other government bodies. We have started doing this work so that people could see. How they will be executing these powers is a different question,” the head of state said.

“People will see some results of this work this year already. There are, for example, five issues on which the parliament, the government will need to take decisions without the president. If you agree and decide, I will sign your decision into the law. I will show the people how the work can be carried out outside this authoritarian system, which is prescribed by the Constitution, without violating the Constitution,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
