Lukashenko on funding priorities in sport

MINSK, 18 December (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has outlined the priority areas in the sports industry that will get funding as he addressed a government’s session held on 18 December to discuss the development of summer sports in the country, BelTA has learned.

The head of state reminded that the goal has been set to provide sports schools with sports gear and equipment. “God forbid this instruction will not be fulfilled. Stop asking the NOC for money. It does not have the money for people who want to prop up cushy jobs for them and their subordinates in the sports federations,” the president said.

“Money will be allotted to support coaches, to pay for participation in international competitions. We will pay a lot for results. There will be no other valid grounds to ask for funding. This is my fundamental decision as the president of the country,” the president said.

Alexander Lukashenko explained that sport is mostly financed with public funds, whether it is tax exemption or sponsorship. “You earn, you spend the way you like,” he said.

The president also inquired about the use of the country’s sport infrastructure, its accessibility to people and, first of all, to younger generation. Alexander Lukashenko reminded the sport and tourism minister of personal responsibility for state property, i.e. sports centers and sports gear. “The main thing is sport facilities. They should be in perfect condition,” the head of state said.
