Lukashenko on Belarus’ SCO accession: We will become stronger

Lukashenko on Belarus’ SCO accession: We will become stronger

MINSK, 31 March (BelTA) – Belarus’ forthcoming accession to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) as a full member will make the country stronger, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he delivered his annual Address to the Belarusian people and the National Assembly on 31 March, BelTA has learned.

“The forthcoming accession of Belarus to the SCO as a full member opens new prospects. Today this organization is one of the world’s largest regional associations. As part of it, we will become stronger, and we will make it stronger by providing additional opportunities for cooperation in many areas, including industrial cooperation and logistics, and continuing the development of the Silk Road,” the head of state said.

The president sees as promising the formation of a common educational space, taking into account the discredited ideas of the Bologna process, the development of new industries and the most advanced research where the West fences us off. These are artificial intelligence, microelectronics, materials science, medicine, and military-industrial production.

“Western financial instruments are vulnerable and politicized, so we need to actively develop the instruments of the new Eurasian financial system, including bank payments and transactions, the rating assessment of institutions and assets. We need to work on much more, including information security and food security,” the president said.

“In general, in political terms, the SCO is a good, promising platform to make up for all the things we failed to get in the OSCE, the Council of Europe, the UN, the IMF and other international organizations,” the Belarusian leader said.

He mentioned that Belarus had announced its plans to join the SCO far before the sanctions were imposed. “It was some five or six years ago. You remember how I was criticized then for my intention to access the SCO? It has turned out to the right move,” the head of state said.
