Lukashenko on AI: ‘I do not want any computer to replace us’

 MINSK, 18 December (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has expressed skepticism that artificial intelligence can replace human beings and has stated his firm opposition to such a development. He made these remarks during a Q&A session following his Address to the Belarusian People and Parliament, BelTA has learned.

“I do not want any machine or computer to replace us. I don’t believe this will happen, and I will do everything in my power to prevent it,” the president said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko mentioned that during earlier visits to the Emirates, he was told about progress in the field. Yet he remains unconvinced that AI can surpass human capability. “Like most people, I am not yet persuaded. It is difficult for me to discuss this topic in depth because I lack the expertise. For now, these are just my thoughts,” he noted.

Nevertheless, the head of state stressed that certain things must be taken seriously. He pointed, for example, to an AI-generated video circulating online that depicted him addressing parliament in French. “I examined it closely and I saw that the facial expressions were completely different. And who among the public would even scrutinize it? Where can this lead? To a coup d’état. It can turn the whole country upside down. This is something we must account for,” the president warned.
