Lukashenko names roads, bridges as main construction goals for Polesie

LYASKOVICHI, 15 August (BelTA) – Roads and bridges will be the main construction focus in Polesie, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at the opening ceremony of the Call of Polesie festival on Lyaskovichi on 15 August, BelTA has learned.

The head of state emphasized that development programs are being implemented in the region, with substantial budget funding allocated for this purpose. “I want to make it clear: I am not just pushing to pump massive funds into this region. Naturally, no development is possible without it, and we are talking about big money,” he said.

“However, after reviewing your feedback and considering our national interests, we will focus on building what matters most to you – roads and bridges. Nothing can function without them. People say we live in a swampland. Well, it’s not a swampland, luckily for us, there is an abundance of water here [in Polesie], a resource the rest of the world is desperate for. We have plenty of this resource, we just need to manage it wisely,” Aleksandr Lukashenko underscored.

According to him, the latest program for Polesie aims to provide people with decent living conditions, rewarding employment, and fair wages, adding that it “will establish highly unique conditions for the Poleshuks to live and work where necessary.” “Only one thing is required from you – discipline, order, and hard work,” the president said.

The head of state explained that future efforts will focus on developing larger communities. “We will concentrate resources in agrotowns, which is vital for Polesie, and big villages. People no longer want to live in swamplands or remote farmsteads. They care about their children’s future, needing proper education and full amenities, which only large agrotowns like Lyaskovichi can offer. Everything in these places should be just like in a city so people won’t look to leave, though locals aren’t actually fleeing to Minsk or other major cities anyway,” the president said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized that the Polesie development program must set the groundwork for reshaping the region in this manner. Furthermore, the state intends to apply a similar approach to other regions across the country.
