Lukashenko lays wreath at National 9/11 Memorial in New York

NEW YORK, 28 September (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko is on a working visit to the United States of America on 26-29 September, BelTA informs.

On 26 September the Belarusian head of state laid a wreath at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York. The President also laid flowers on the marble slab with the name of one of the 9/11 victims, Irina Buslo of Belarus.

The memorial was built to honor 3,000 people that were killed in a terror act on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon on 11 September 2001 as well as six people killed in the World Trade Center bombing in February 1993. The memorial was opened at the site of the former World Trade Center buildings in downtown Manhattan, not far away from Wall Street.

Two water reservoirs of the memorial (the area of each is over 4,000 square meters) symbolizes grief over the perished people and represent the biggest hand-made waterfalls in North America. The pools are located in the footprints of the Twin Towers. The names of the victims of the attacks (including those from the Pentagon, American Airlines Flight 77, United Airlines Flight 93, and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing) are inscribed on the parapets surrounding the waterfalls.
