MINSK, 17 November (BelTA) – Alexander Lukashenko said he felt disappointment and joy simultaneously when he saw the Russian flag carried by the Belarusian sport functionary Andrei Fomochkin during the Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made the relevant statement while talking to representatives of Russian regional mass media in Minsk on 17 November, BelTA has learned.

“I felt disappointment because they didn’t do it the way it should have been done and joy because the spare flag was available,” said the President.

The head of state described the flag demonstration as a display of unity of Belarus and Russia. “We wanted to demonstrate that we absolutely support Russia against the illegal and wrong pressure exercised by certain forces upon the Russian Federation,” continued Alexander Lukashenko.

The President went on saying that Belarusians had seen the unjust treatment of the Russian Paralympic team and had not been able to regard the situation calmly. “We did what any man, whose brother is wronged, should have done,” stressed the head of state.
