MINSK, 24 April (BelTA) – After studying the draft decree “On the operation of the forestry industry and the sales of timber”, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko gave an instruction to finalize the document, Belarus Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Nazarov told journalists after delivering the report on the draft decree to the head of state on 24 April, BelTA has learned.
“The decision was as follows: to finalize the decree and report back to the president. Perhaps, we were not convincing enough, so our proposals were not supported,” Yuri Nazarov said.
He explained that the draft decree is meant to regulate timber sales on the domestic market. The current regulations have been in place since 2007 and, according to the deputy prime minister, some provisions have grown outdated. “We have suggested amending the existing rules taking into account the current realities,” Yuri Nazarov noted.
The draft decree does not provide for exporting timber, Yuri Nazarov added. “Round timber can be supplied to foreign markets only with the president’s permission. In some cases, the president allows this, for example, when we had an overage of timber after a natural disaster,” he said.
According to Yuri Nazarov, the draft decree will be finalized in the next week or two, after which it will be submitted to the president again.
