Lukashenko inaugurates Grodno Oblast Clinical Hospital
GRODNO, 5 June (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko officially opened the Grodno Oblast Clinical Hospital in a ceremony on 5 June, BelTA has learned.
Addressing the ceremony participants, including doctors, hospital staff, and construction workers, the president emphasized that this is a modern, world-class medical facility. At the same time, it was built without excess, but is optimal for providing quality care. “This hospital is looking toward the future,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
According to him, some experts had expressed the opinion that perhaps such a large scale and construction costs were excessive for Grodno. The president reasonably noted in response that there will be no fewer diseases in the future. Therefore, on the one hand, people need to take better care of their health, protect it, and lead a healthy lifestyle, while on the other hand, the state must have modern healthcare facilities to provide medical care to the population, as well as timely and accurate diagnosis of diseases.
According to the president, the opening of the new oblast hospital in Grodno makes it possible to optimize the structure of medical care for the population of the entire region over the long term and to centralize diagnostic and therapeutic care for the oblast’s population in the field of therapy. In this sense, the number of beds it is designed for is not at all excessive. Residents of the northern districts of Brest Oblast or the western districts of Minsk Oblast will also be able to receive care here. On this matter, Aleksandr Lukashenko noted that of the several hundred million Belarusian rubles spent on the construction and equipment of the new hospital, only several tens of millions were financed from the budget of Grodno Oblast. “Keep this in mind, don’t get too haughty. If someone comes and asks for help, provide it. Even if someone from Poland comes to you, support them, for a certain amount of money, of course,” the Belarusian leader said.
Furthermore, the new hospital has the capability for each wing to operate autonomously if such a need arises, as was the case during the coronavirus pandemic. “We know how to learn lessons from the problems that arise in the world,” the president said.
“Generally speaking, the people of Grodno are a pleasure to behold. Well done. You are setting an example for the entire country on how to live and work. You must, and I include myself in this, teach our Belarusians, in the west, the east, and the center, how to take care of their health,” said Aleksandr Lukashenko.
The new hospital on Yanka Kupala Avenue in Grodno has 504 beds and replaces the bed capacity of two old hospitals. It will also operate in coordination with City Hospital No. 4, allowing for the rational use of the city’s healthcare bed capacity and eliminating duplication. The new hospital will primarily house therapeutic departments.
The hospital status will make it possible to more effectively fulfill one of the main tasks facing the oblast’s healthcare system, which is creating equal opportunities for urban and rural populations to receive accessible, high-quality, and safe medical care, including specialized and high-tech care, in modern, comfortable conditions.
The facility was designed without excess, but taking into account the experience gained from healthcare operations during the coronavirus pandemic. The hospital has four separate wings, allowing for easy zoning when necessary.
Construction of the new healthcare facility began in 2024. In April of that year, the president visited the construction site and laid a capsule with a message to future generations. At that time, he ordered that the project be accelerated and completed within a tighter timeframe. In the end, instead of the projected four-plus years, the hospital was built in just two years.
The new hospital was needed due to the comprehensive optimization of bed capacity at two other Grodno hospitals located in old buildings that did not meet modern requirements - namely, City Hospital No. 2 and City Hospital No. 3. The latter is currently being reconstructed to host the Grodno Oblast Clinical Oncology Center with 312 beds.
