Lukashenko explains why he postponed meeting with religious figures until after election

MINSK, 10 February (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko rejected the idea of meeting with representatives of religious communities before the election  and proposed to postpone this meeting until after the election, so that no one would link it to politics, BelTA has learned.

“This meeting was proposed to be held in the run-up to the election. And I strongly rejected this idea back then. I did not want to be accused of playing some kind of games before the election and so on. I said: “Let's meet after the election and talk about pressing problems.” I did not want anyone to think that there was some political agenda behind the meeting and that I wanted to use our churches and you to influence believers,” the head of state said.

Therefore, according to Aleksandr Lukashenko, the meeting was postponed until the post-election period, so that it would take place in a cordial atmosphere and discuss long-term plans and will not be aimed at generating immediate political benefits.
