Lukashenko describes new Constitution as forward-thinking document

MINSK, 4 March (BelTA) – The updated Constitution, which citizens voted for during the referendum, can be called a constitution of the future without false modesty. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement during the solemn ceremony held on 4 March to sign the decision of the national constitutional referendum, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “We’ve created and adopted a unique legal document. It combines traditions and innovations, rule of the people, and the unity of government. It can be called a constitution of the future without false modesty. The adopted constitutional amendments will come into force in ten days. However, as I’ve already said the work will not stop at that. We are just at the beginning of the road today.”

The president thanked every person, who had demonstrated a civic stand, submitted proposals, collected and processed the massive amount of ideas generated by the people, and organized dialogue platforms. “Parliamentarians, mass media, trade unions, and experts, who professionally and convincingly explained nuances of the suggested amendments to the people, did great,” he said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko also mentioned the good coordination of all participants of the process of preparation and organization of the referendum. “Polling station commissions and territorial commissions under the guidance of the new Central Election Commission leadership have successfully accomplished their tasks. The atmosphere at polling stations was festive. As it always was in Belarus. I thank everyone, who created the atmosphere with their talent and art on the historically important day. People calmly and confidently came to vote. Everyone felt completely secure, including thanks to the smooth work of our law enforcement bodies.”

He concluded: “It means that the period, which we were so much stressed about and which unexpectedly dropped on us in August 2020, is over. The nation has put an end to this mess. We are starting a new period of hard creative work. Results of this period will depend only on us.”
