MINSK, 9 December (BelTA) - The situation at the Belarus-Ukraine border has stabilized to some extent, although there are still some problems, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at a meeting of the Security Council in Minsk on 9 December, BelTA has learned.
“The situation at the Belarus-Ukraine border has more or less stabilized, although there are still some problems. Yesterday our chief border guard [Chairman of the State Border Committee Konstantin Molostov] reported to me that there are many issues that need to be resolved in a ‘mobilization’ manner: to establish the border that has been abandoned from the Ukrainian side, to build outposts, and to arm the border guards,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

Moreover, the Belarusian leader noted, the Armed Forces have to back up the border guards in a second line: “Certainly, this takes away not only our focus, but also resources.”
Aleksandr Lukashenko also drew attention to the western direction, pointing to Poland and Germany as well as smaller states bordering Belarus. “They are not only increasing their military budgets but also attempting to double the size of their armies. A simple, down-to-earth question arises: if anyone is doing something, it means they need it for a reason. These countries will not spend enormous sums of money just for what they call confrontation with Russia and Belarus,” he asserted.
