Lukashenko calls to keep villages alive

VILEIKA, 7 August (BelTA) - Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko spoke about the need to preserve the village as he talked with residents of Vileika District, BelTA has learned.
In Vileika, the head of state held a meeting on providing rural communities with a full and diverse range of goods to cover all their needs. In this connection, while speaking with local residents, he addressed the importance of preserving the village.
“I am not fighting for collective farms, state farms, or private farmers. Not even for agriculture as such. I am fighting for the village so that it survives in some form,” Aleksandr Lukashenko explained.
The president drew attention to the need to develop infrastructure in rural communities, ensuring that the population has everything they need. One step in this direction has been the creation of agrotowns. “People will no longer live on isolated farmsteads. They want to live in a city [or having the conditions close to those of urban living). So let's create a rural town, an agrotown,” he said.
Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized that during the current five-year plan, a road will be built to every agrotown that does not already have one. “We have already set the plan, allocated the funds, and started building the missing roads. But for the most part, roads are already in place,” the Belarusian leader stated.
The head of state also noted that issues related to serving rural residents were among the central topics of his working trip to Vileika District. The district was among those selected for an experiment to improve trade services for rural communities with the involvement of large retail chains. At the meeting, Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized: if such chains want to collect profits in big cities, they must also take responsibility for remote villages.
“I’ll quote myself again: there are no pockets in a coffin. If you’ve made some money, of you can help someone, please help. There’s no need to stuff your own pockets,” he said.
