Lukashenko calls on Foreign Ministry, embassies to defend Belarus’ interests resolutely

MINSK, 9 October (BelTA) – The Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and diplomats should communicate the country’s position in unambiguous terms and defend its interests more resolutely, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at a session to discuss topical issues on 9 October, BelTA has learned.

“Unfortunately, the West keeps trying to destabilize the situation in our country. Methods are the same: political, economic, and especially information pressure, and also sanctions,” the head of state noted. “I see that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stepped up its work. However, this is not enough. We should be firm in defending our interests and confronting our counterparts, in particular politicians from Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and in some way Ukraine,” he added.

Many people in these countries support cooperation with Belarus, the president believes. According to him, it is necessary to explain to them that the path of confrontation chosen by their politicians is wrong. “We should show Lithuanians, Latvians, Poles, Ukrainians, and others that their politicians are on the wrong track. This can lead to similar consequences as the ongoing events in the Caucasus. For example, Riga is facing a difficult choice between immediate gains and the advantages that the cooperation with Belarus brings. We need to show them what they might lose,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

“As for Poland that is hyping on the situation in Belarus – just wait a week and see what will happen in Poland. Why are Lithuania, Poland, and Ukraine interfering in our affairs? Because the situation is very bad there and they need to distract people and put the blame on us. Have some patience, their people will soon start asking questions,” the president said. “They say our ‘election was unfair with the 80% win’. Andrzej Duda won 50.5% of the vote in Poland. Some say that the election was rigged. This is the situation they should be dealing with,” he added.
