MINSK, 18 December (BelTA) – Belarus needs a new national approach with certain conditions to encourage relocation to rural areas, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said in his Address to the Belarusian people and the Parliament on 18 December, BelTA has learned.

To stop the outflow of people from the regions to big cities, it is necessary, first of all, to address employment and housing issues, the head of state believes.

“We are not a Western country where people are used to living in rented housing for a long time, sometimes for their entire lives. Belarusians prefer to live in their own houses and apartments, and that is good! Therefore, young professionals should have the right to buy out rental housing in the future, and its construction should be linked to job creation,” the president said.

“A new national approach is needed, one that encourages moving to rural areas, with certain conditions,” Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized. “I will not elaborate on what needs to be done in this regard. I believe the government will take care of it and report. However, the government, together with our MPs, must submit their well-developed proposals on this matter in the very near future. And if we are talking about retaining young professionals in the regions, we must pay attention to families with children.”
