Lukashenko: Belarusian People’s Congress session attracted global attention

MINSK, 19 December (BelTA) - The second session of the VII Belarusian People’s Congress, held in Minsk on 18-19 December, attracted close attention both inside the country and far beyond its borders, Belarusian President and Chairman of the Congress Aleksandr Lukashenko said in his concluding remarks, BelTA has learned.

“Those who said that the Belarusian People’s Congress is being watched not only by millions within Belarus, our friends and neighbors, but also closely observed outside our country, including in the West, were right. They are watching very attentively,” the head of state noted.

Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed that Russian President Vladimir Putin watched the first day of the Congress live on 18 December. “Vladimir Vladimirovich [Putin] congratulated all of us. He said that he had watched our Belarusian People’s Congress live yesterday and congratulated us on a great success,” the president remarked. He pointed out that his Russian counterpart, whom Aleksandr Lukashenko often calls his “elder brother”, also had “a very important reporting period” on 19 December, namely his annual press conference.

The Belarusian president expressed confidence that developments at the Congress were also closely followed in China. “I am absolutely convinced that our distant friend Xi Jinping, a great friend of the Belarusian people (thanks to China we have already achieved much and will achieve more), also followed this closely. Likewise, other Asian and African leaders of countries with which we have had and will continue to have good relations – our wealth and happiness will also grow [thanks to developing contacts with these coutries]. I am sure they too will gladly note the success of our session today,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

“This means we are far from alone in this world,” he emphasized.
