MINSK, 9 August (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko is confident that Belarus and Russia will maintain normal relations in the future. The Belarusian head of state made this statement as he answered reporters’ questions after casting his ballot on 9 August, BelTA has learned.

Upon the journalists’ request, Aleksandr Lukashenko unveiled the details of the recent phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Belarusian head of state noted that he had recently reproached Russia for downgrading relations with Belarus from brotherly relations to partner cooperation. The Russian president responded: “We will build brotherly relations with you. As for the ongoing developments, let us sort it out. I will send you information we have now.” The following day Aleksandr Lukashenko received a letter detailing all the facts from the Russian side. The Investigative Committee of Belarus is now studying them.

“As to the future [of Belarus-Russia relations],  if someone hopes that our relations with Russia have gone really bad, they are mistaken! The Russian president and I will take a decision, and no mass media outlets, no Wagner Group fighters [reference to the arrest of 33 militants of the Wagner private military company in Belarus] and others are not able to affect it.”
