Lukashenko begins working visit to China

BEIJING, 25 April (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko has arrived in China on a working visit. The plane with the Belarusian head of state on board has landed in Beijing Capital International Airport, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko is scheduled to take part in the 2nd Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing on 25-27 April. The head of state will lay out Belarus’ proposals to further develop this global initiative, strengthen cooperation on the Eurasian space with a focus on an equal and transparent system of international trade.

The president is set to hold a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the event. The Belarusian leader and China President Xi Jinping are expected to discuss the implementation of the biggest joint projects, the development of interregional cooperation and prospects for bolstering Belarus-China ties in trade, economic, investment, humanitarian and other areas.

A big Belarusian delegation including representatives of ministries and agencies had arrived to Beijing ahead of the Belarusian president’s visit. A number of meetings had already been held. More than ten agreements had been signed to boost cooperation in various areas.

In his Annual State of the Nation Address on 19 April Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized the importance of strategic partnership with China. Interaction between the two countries has entered into a new era, reaching the level of special trust-based comprehensive strategic mutually beneficial partnership. Belarus plays an important role in the implementation of international initiatives of China. “Belarus is the strongest thread in the Silk Road fabric,” the head of state stressed.

In September 2013 Chinese President Xi Jinping put forward an initiative to develop the Silk Road Economic Belt aimed at the establishment of new interregional cooperation. Together with the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road initiative, the united concept was named Belt and Road. Cooperation priorities along the Belt and Road initiative include policy coordination, facilities connectivity, unimpeded trade, financial integration and people-to-people bonds.

Belarus was among the first to support the initiative and continues its active participation in it. The Great Stone Industrial Park is one of the key elements in the initiative. Over 40 residents have been registered in the park. More than $443 million has been invested in the park since the launch of the project. Projects cover such sectors as electronics and telecommunications, pharmaceuticals and biotechnologies, mechanical engineering, new materials, laser equipment, unmanned systems.
