Lukashenko backs production of articulated tractors in Belarus

MINSK, 25 July (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has backed the proposal of the Belarusian mechanical engineering company OAO Amkodor to start making tractors based on an articulated frame in Belarus, BelTA learned from Belarusian Industry Minister Vitaly Vovk after the government report on prospects of developing the national tractor engineering industry was presented to the head of state on 25 July.

The industry minister noted: “Belarus will have articulated tractors of its own. Amkodor and MTZ will find mutually acceptable cooperation options.”

Vitaly Vovk pointed out that such tractors are in demand abroad and Belarus would be able to compete with foreign manufacturers. It means the project has great prospects.

It is yet unclear what brand will be used to make the tractors and what enterprise will assemble these tractors. It is possible that Belarusian manufacturers will just exchange their technologies and R&D products. Amkodor and MTZ may establish tight manufacturing cooperation. It will allow combining efforts of the country’s best specialists in addition to avoiding the extra cost of starting the production of the tractors from scratch. Alexander Lukashenko gave instructions to prepare proposals on how work on this project will proceed by 1 September.

The commercial production of articulated tractors will begin in Belarus after the tractors are thoroughly tested. “I think it will happen in a year or two,” said Vitaly Vovk. “Pilot batches will be made for it. Exploitation will begin earlier. Maybe next year.”

As far as the development of tractor manufacturing in Belarus as a whole is concerned, the need to expand the product range was stressed during the government conference. The step is expected to bolster the country’s export potential and satisfy domestic demand.
