Lukashenko: 2024 election will be largest but not easiest campaign in recent years

MINSK, 20 October (BelTA) – The 2024 election, which will be held in accordance with the new rules, will be the largest campaign in recent years but by no means the easiest, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at a meeting to discuss the issues related to the Belarusian People's Congress and the changes in the election laws on 20 October, BelTA has learned.

"We must take a systemic and competent approach to amending the Electoral Code," the head of state emphasized. “This is the most important legislative act regulating electoral processes in the country, starting from national referendums to elections to village councils. Everything should be spelled out clearly both for voters and for members of election commissions.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko noted that the need to change the code was brewing gradually, over several years. "But now life itself forces us to act quickly and step up work. We must hold the 2024 election according to the new rules. A little over a year left. This will be the largest campaign in recent years," he said. After all, this will be a single voting day. Within a short period of time, it will be necessary to elect deputies to parliaments of all levels, form the composition of the Council of the Republic, and nominate delegates to the Belarusian People's Congress.

"There will be no easy election campaigns. You see the conditions in which our country is living now: uncertainty of the international situation, unprecedented external pressure, information attacks and provocations," the president said. At the beginning of the meeting, the president spoke about the harvesting campaign and the government's decision regarding price control: "Indeed, we need to harvest and sow on time. People should see that we are a state for the people."

Continuing the conversation about amendments to the electoral legislation, Aleksandr Lukashenko said: "The CEC proposes a significant reduction in the number of district election commissions. Let's discuss this. I don't think in this respect, we must take a look at elections abroad, sort out other problems."
