Lebedev: Belarus will co-chair CIS in 2020, preside in 2021

ASHGABAT, 10 October (BelTA) – Belarus will co-chair the CIS in 2020, Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee, CIS Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev told the media, BelTA has learned.

“Minsk is considered the unofficial capital of the CIS as it houses the CIS headquarters. We receive great support in all aspects of our work in Minsk and we greatly appreciate it. We get support in terms of the venue, all kinds of initiatives,” Sergei Lebedev noted.

Sergei Lebedev also said that Belarus agreed to co-chair the CIS in 2020, and is expected to take over the CIS presidency in 2021. “Belarus has repeatedly presided over the CIS and has always succeeded in this mission. We strongly believe that Belarus will remain the most active member of the CIS,” Sergei Lebedev said.

Uzbekistan is to take over the CIS presidency in 2020, Turkmenistan and Belarus are to co-chair. The matter will be fully discussed at the CIS summit in Ashgabat on 11 October.
