The embassy has discharged the relevant functions since 1 January 2015 but on 25 February Ambassador of Latvia to Belarus Mihails Popkovs officially took over the responsibility from his Estonian counterpart Mait Martinson. The mandate of the contact embassy will be in effect for two years — till 31 December 2016.
“NATO’s contact embassy is not a diplomatic mission. Our key task is to get Belarusians familiar with goals and operations of NATO, cover the organization’s policy, and build and bolster contacts in your country. Apart from that, we will help official NATO delegations that arrive in Belarus settle in during their visits,” said the Ambassador of Latvia.
